Why Is Understanding Neurodiversity Important For Your Organisation or Business?

Legal Compliance
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) laws mandate that organisations make reasonable adjustments for employees.
This is not optional but a legal requirement.

Financial Impact
Failing to accommodate neurodiversity can be costly. According to the Deloitte Mental Health Report for Employers 2022, poor mental health costs UK employers £56 billion annually due to absenteeism, presenteeism, and staff turnover.
This includes a £120 billion cost to the UK economy. However, there is a £5.31 return for every £1 spent on integrating wellbeing into your organisation’s culture.

Enhanced Talent Pool
By understanding and accommodating the strengths and challenges of neurodiverse individuals, organisations can access a wider talent pool. This inclusivity fosters a more diverse, innovative, and productive work environment.
What is Neurodiversity?
Neurodiversity challenges the notion that there is a single ‘normal’ way of thinking or brain function. For example, someone with autism may have exceptional attention to detail and pattern recognition, showcasing a different but equally valuable way of thinking. It encompasses the full range of human brain variation.
The term neurodivergent refers to individuals who have different cognitive processing styles compared to the majority. This term is often applied to those with neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, and Tourette’s syndrome.
For instance, a person with dyslexia may struggle with reading and writing but might excel in creative problem-solving or visual thinking. This diversity in cognitive functioning highlights that there is no one right way to think or learn.
It is estimated that about 1 in 5 people in the UK are neurodivergent, though the true number may be significantly higher.
