Josh’s Story – Finding Confidence and Connection at Work

It’s not easy to talk openly about the challenges of being autistic at work. But Josh, one of our group participants, chose to share his story to help others feel less alone. His words speak of common struggles and the value of the right support.

Before – Struggling with Stigma Around Autism in the Workplace

My main difficulty was trying to overcome the stigma that was attached to autism in the workplace. I always felt afraid to mention my shortcomings and disabilities when applying, out of the fear they would turn me down. Thanks to Neurorocket, I have learned about my rights in the workplace and also about my strengths that employers are actually looking for. So I don’t see these aspects of myself as a negative anymore.

I also had difficulty learning and trying to do everything myself. Now I know about the services provided, I can feel more relaxed and less stressed to tackle problems with so much pressure.

Finding a Sense of Connection with Others

This group has helped me find a place of connection with others who deal with similar issues. It makes me feel less alone to know that I can connect with others about problems that neurotypical people may never have to deal with.

As stated earlier, I now know services available that can offer more support as I try to find work. I am even applying for roles I wouldn’t normally consider thanks to the opportunities from Neurorocket.

Support and Encouragement from Michelle

Michelle helped me personally to keep me from doubting myself and telling me that even if something doesn’t look like the right fit, it is important to read through and focus on what I CAN do, instead of focusing on what I can’t. she was very laid back and welcoming to all of us. This was vital in helping us all feel comfortable in explaining our deep-routed obstacles to work.

Realising I’m Not the Only One

What surprised me the most was learning about how often these problems occur and what many people like myself have to deal with. A lot of us feel incredibly alone in dealing with our disabilities. Even worse, we often feel we have to do these things on our own in an effort to prove we are just as capable as everyone else.

We’re Not Lesser—We Just Have More Steps to Climb!

Through Neurorocket, I have learned that we ARE capable. We just have more steps to climb. By asking for help and accepting support, we can climb those extra steps and walk alongside everyone else, without believing we are lesser people.
